Google has announced support for Dolby 5.1 on YouTube TV over a year ago, and now it is becoming available on various hardware devices. If you watch YouTube TV on Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV, you can update the app to enjoy true surround sound if your audio setup allows for it.
The addition of 5.1 sound enhances the viewing experience on YouTube TV, particularly for programs like movies, live shows, and sports events that support it. The 5.1 audio mode will activate automatically at the beginning of supported programs, provided you have a 5.1 audio system or compatible headphones to fully experience it.
Initially, Dolby 5.1 was available on Google's devices like Chromecast, Android TV, and Roku TV, as well as Smart TVs from LG, Vizio, and Samsung. Now, more streaming devices are getting support, highlighting the importance of content over platform.
All YouTube TV subscribers can enjoy Dolby 5.1 regardless of their package. You can check if a channel supports 5.1 sound by accessing the "Stats for Nerds" menu and looking for the AC-3 or EAC-3 audio codec. If it's mentioned, then the channel supports it, and the rest depends on how the program was produced.
If you're a YouTube TV subscriber with Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV, have you tested the Dolby 5.1 feature yet? What audio setup do you recommend for the best experience? Share your thoughts in the comments!
